Liverpool manager Arne Slot was quick to pay homage to his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, moments after his side secured the Premier League title.
The Reds’ emphatic 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday clinched their record-equalling 20th top-flight championship, marking a historic achievement for Slot as the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League.
“It feels great. I don’t think I want to say a lot. The only thing now is to send my appreciation to Jurgen Klopp,” Slot, who took over from the iconic Klopp as Liverpool manager last summer, told LFCTV in a heartfelt tribute.
The 46-year-old then spontaneously began singing the song that Klopp had requested Liverpool fans to sing after his final match last May, cleverly substituting the lyrics ‘Arne Slot’ with ‘Jurgen Klopp’ in a touching gesture of respect.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Slot expressed his certainty of an imminent congratulatory message from his predecessor. “I am 99.9% sure that if I pick up my phone there will be a message from Jurgen,” he said. “So many moments in the season the two of us have had contact. I think he showed last season what a wonderful human being he is by introducing me. But what mattered most is the team he left behind that was able to win the trophy.”
Slot further acknowledged the significant groundwork laid by Klopp and his assistant Pep Lijnders, telling Sky Sports, “The work Jurgen and Pep [Lijnders] did – the culture, work-rate, quality – was outstanding,” underscoring the lasting impact of the previous regime on Liverpool’s title-winning success. Football fans in Kumasi and across Ghana, many of whom keenly follow the Premier League, will appreciate this display of respect and the passing of the baton between two influential managers.
