EPA Warns Kumasi Residents to Stop Clogging Waterways with Waste Ahead of Rains

As the rainy season approaches, the EPA warns that clogged drains and careless dumping could lead to devastating floods in Kumasi.

Story Highlights
  • Improper waste disposal is causing blocked drains and increasing flood risks
  • EPA urges residents to think of long-term environmental impact and future generations
  • Penalties exist, but the EPA prefers education and community responsibility

As the rainy season looms, the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is urging residents of Kumasi to stop the improper disposal of waste, especially into drains and waterways.

Dr. Jackson Adiyah Nyantakyi, the Ashanti Regional Director of the EPA, issued the warning during an interview on Lawson TV/Radio Ghana’s Se Sen Morning Show with sit-in host Oduefuor Nana Asabre Pinamang. He emphasized that dumping refuse irresponsibly not only contributes to severe flooding but also poses major health risks.

“Disposing of waste the wrong way harms the environment, and eventually, the environment fights back,” Dr. Nyantakyi said.

He stressed that while there are penalties for offenders—and many have already been prosecuted—the EPA prefers education over punishment.

He made a passionate appeal to residents: “Think about the damage you’re doing—not just for today, but for the generations to come.”

He concluded with a warning: “When the environment is under stress, it retaliates.”
