- GJA demands urgent action in the investigation of Ahmed Suale's murder
- Eleven journalists were assaulted in February
- Calls for a balanced approach to AI in journalism
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has once again urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take immediate action in the ongoing investigation into the tragic murder of journalist Ahmed Suale.
At the 2025 World Press Freedom Day and Honours Night, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour highlighted the assault of 11 journalists in February, stressing the growing need to protect press freedom and ensure justice for media practitioners facing violence.
“The situation is dire, especially when it comes to economic, security, and legislative challenges,” Dwumfour stated.
“This is why we continue to demand that the police take journalist attacks seriously. We need to hold those responsible accountable to deter future violence and put an end to impunity. Our fight for justice in the case of our slain colleague, Ahmed Suale, remains unwavering. Now is the time for the IGP to act.”
In addition, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, raised concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism.
He called for careful regulation to prevent the spread of fake news, urging the creation of a policy framework to ensure AI advances do not undermine press freedom.
“We must protect press freedom in an age where AI is reshaping media,” Afenyo-Markin emphasized.
“The solution lies in balancing innovation with transparency, accountability, and human dignity, and creating frameworks that safeguard press freedom both nationally and regionally.”
