Bayern Munich has confirmed that key full-back Alphonso Davies will be sidelined for “several months” after tearing the cruciate ligament in his right knee, requiring surgery.

The injury occurred during Canada’s Concacaf Nations League third-place match against the United States on Sunday.

Adding to Bayern’s woes, defender Dayot Upamecano will also be out for several weeks due to a knee problem sustained while on international duty with France.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl acknowledged the setback, stating, “Unfortunately, during international breaks there’s always the risk that players will return injured – this time it’s hit us particularly hard.” He expressed confidence in the squad’s depth to compensate for the absences.

Davies, who recently signed a new five-year contract, has been a vital player for Bayern, making 226 appearances since joining in 2018. Upamecano has also been a regular since his 2021 arrival.

The injuries come at a crucial time for Bayern, who lead the Bundesliga by six points with eight games remaining and are set to face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals, with the first leg on April 8th.
