Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament, has labeled the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, as a savvy politician who excels in “political mischief.”
Afenyo-Markin criticized Bagbin for skipping the roll call during Parliament’s proceedings before adjourning the House indefinitely.
He explained that the Speaker was supposed to conduct the roll call to determine if a quorum was present. Instead, Bagbin moved on to other agenda items, which Afenyo-Markin claims was a deliberate tactic to sidestep protocol.
In an interview on October 22, 2024, he stated, “Mr. Speaker is a very smart politician; he has a way of engaging in political mischief. By avoiding the roll call, he bypassed a crucial part of our proceedings.”
He emphasized that a roll call is essential, even if members of one side of the House are absent, as it establishes attendance and numbers.
This controversy follows the indefinite adjournment of Parliament due to the lack of a quorum, raising questions about the Speaker’s methods and intentions.
