Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has firmly stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not permit the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament to create chaos or disrupt Ghana’s peace.
In a media briefing on October 22, he explained that the NPP’s decision to withdraw to their offices was a tactical move aimed at preventing confrontation after a dispute arose regarding the Majority side of the Chamber.
Tensions escalated earlier that day when NPP MPs vacated the Parliamentary Chamber following the NDC’s assertion to take over the majority position.
This situation was triggered by a ruling from Speaker Alban Bagbin on October 17, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant—a ruling the NPP has challenged in the Supreme Court, which granted a stay of execution.
Afenyo-Markin accused the NDC of seeking to provoke the NPP into a physical altercation, a strategy he believes aims to destabilize the nation.
“We won’t allow the NDC to act lawlessly or disturb the peace of Ghana. Our retreat was a deliberate effort to avoid chaos they were trying to instigate,” he stated.
He reiterated the NPP’s commitment to maintaining order and expressed a readiness to await further instructions from Speaker Bagbin before taking any additional actions. “The NPP is a party rooted in lawfulness and tradition of peace. We refuse to provide the NDC with the platform for lawlessness they desire,” he asserted. Afenyo-Markin concluded by emphasizing the importance of civil political engagement for the well-being of all Ghanaians.
