Kejetia Traders Finally Heard as RCC Intervenes After Years of Neglect

After repeated pleas were ignored, Kumasi traders finally get relief as the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council intervenes, dissolving the Kejetia market management to ensure accountability and reforms.

Nana Akwasi Prempeh, President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, has criticized the previous management of the Kumasi City Market (Kejetia), accusing them of ignoring traders’ repeated concerns under the Akufo-Addo administration.

According to him, multiple attempts to engage the former board regarding pressing issues were consistently dismissed, leaving traders frustrated.

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has since directed the market’s current management to step aside to allow investigations into various allegations and improve oversight. This decision follows persistent complaints from traders about poor sanitation, high utility costs, and inadequate service delivery.

The move comes in the wake of a devastating fire at Adum’s Central Business District on March 21, intensifying calls for urgent market reforms. Following discussions between the RCC, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), and the Regional Minister, an Interim Management Committee (IMC) has been formed to ensure accountability and transparency.

Nana Prempeh lauded the RCC for its swift intervention, noting that their efforts mark a significant step toward resolving long-standing trader grievances. He revealed that past petitions to the former board chairman yielded no satisfactory response, but the new administration, led by Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has taken decisive action to address their concerns.
