Dr. Ken Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has issued a stark warning that Ghana’s battle against illegal mining—locally known as galamsey—could be lost if swift and decisive action isn’t taken early in President John Dramani Mahama’s term.

Speaking during an interview Ing. Ashigbey emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging authorities to act firmly within the first two years of the administration before political distractions, such as internal party competition, derail progress.

“The opportunity to end galamsey is closing quickly. If we don’t address it now, and political campaigning takes center stage, the momentum will be lost,” he warned.

Ashigbey also called for broader national support, urging professional organizations to rally alongside the media in holding government accountable.

He highlighted the importance of applying consistent pressure—offering praise where progress is made, but also demanding accountability when necessary.

His comments come amid growing public anxiety over the devastating environmental and health consequences of illegal mining, particularly in Ghana’s forests and waterways.

A long-time advocate for collaborative action, Ashigbey reiterated the need for a unified effort involving government, civil society, and the general public to tackle what he describes as one of the country’s most enduring environmental challenges.
