Tipper Truck Accident Causes Nationwide Power Outage – GRIDCo and ECG Confirm
GRIDCo and ECG say a raised truck bucket struck a key transmission line, cutting power to several regions

- Tipper truck struck a major transmission line near Nkawkaw
- Power plants at Aboadze and Anwomaso tripped

A widespread power outage that affected several regions in Ghana on Thursday has been linked to a tipper truck accident, according to a joint release from the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The disruption occurred around 1:42 p.m. on May 1, 2025, when a truck offloading stones at a private construction site inadvertently struck the Nkawkaw–Konongo transmission line with its elevated bucket. The collision caused significant damage, leading to a cascading system failure.
“This impact caused power plants in Aboadze and Anwomaso to shut down, disrupting electricity supply to the Western, Central, and Northern regions, along with parts of Accra,” the statement explained.
In response, GRIDCo and ECG swiftly dispatched technical teams to the scene to evaluate the situation and begin repairs.
“Restoration work is currently underway, and we anticipate full power will be restored to all affected areas by 6 p.m. today,” the companies assured.
They also extended apologies for the inconvenience and appealed to the public for patience as efforts continue to stabilise the national grid.
