The Ghana Police Service has obtained a court injunction to stop a planned three-day protest against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which was to be held at the Jubilee House.

The demonstration, organized by the advocacy group Generational Right Protection Society (GRPS) and led by broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, was slated to run from Monday, April 28 to Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

According to a police statement, the group has been formally notified about the court application, which is scheduled for a hearing at the Accra High Court on Friday, April 25.

The protest aimed to pressure the government into taking immediate steps to address the environmental destruction caused by unregulated mining activities that are threatening Ghana’s natural resources and communities.

Afrifa-Mensah, speaking in an interview, emphasized that the protest is not meant to sow public dissatisfaction or tarnish the government’s image.

He also mentioned that the demonstration could potentially be extended to a month, depending on the conduct of the participants.
