Afenyo-Markin Questions New IGP Yohonu’s Real Age — Promises to ‘Do the Math’ at the Right Time
The Minority leader questions the legitimacy of IGP Yohonu's 40-year service claim.

Effutu MP and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has cast doubts on the age of the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohonu.
Speaking in Parliament on March 18, 2025, Afenyo-Markin hinted that a deeper investigation into the IGP’s age would be conducted “at the right time.”
His comments stemmed from a government statement announcing that COP Yohonu has served the Ghana Police Service for 40 years. Given that the IGP is reportedly 60 years old, the MP questioned whether he joined the service as a teenager. Afenyo-Markin humorously noted, “At the right time, we will calculate whether he entered at age 20, 19, or 18.”
The new IGP, who succeeded COP George Akuffo Dampare, brings over four decades of law enforcement experience to his new role. As COP Yohonu steps into his leadership position, questions about his age add an unexpected twist to his tenure.
