John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, has lauded the Electoral Commission (EC) for the positive collaboration in the lead-up to Ghana’s December 7 elections.

Speaking at the 2024 Presidential Peace Pact organized by the National Peace Council in Accra on November 28, the former President emphasized the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s hard-earned peace and avoiding election-related violence.

While recognizing the EC’s efforts, Mahama cautioned that the signing of peace agreements must be followed by meaningful actions to prevent a recurrence of past election violence, referencing tragic events from the 2020 elections and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

He expressed concern about the potential for violence, citing the use of masked thugs in security uniforms to intimidate voters and questioning whether such acts would be avoided in the upcoming elections.

He stressed that without deliberate efforts, the peace pact could fail to achieve its intended goal of a peaceful election.
