Bawumia Blames NPP’s 2024 Defeat on ‘Arrogance of Power’, E-Levy, and Internal Disunity

The former NPP presidential candidate cites unpopular economic measures, ignored party advice, and internal divisions as key reasons for the party’s electoral defeat.

Story Highlights
  • Unpopular policies like the E-Levy and DDEP alienated voters
  • Internal disunity and failure to reshuffle weakened the NPP
  • High cost of living and unpaid workers eroded public trust

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, has pinpointed key reasons behind the party’s loss in the general elections.

Dr Bawumia highlighting policy missteps and internal fractures. Speaking at Takoradi Technical University during the launch of his nationwide Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia cited factors such as the perceived arrogance of leadership, the introduction of the controversial E-Levy, the government’s failure to implement a reshuffle, and the Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) as major contributors to the defeat.

He acknowledged that these decisions, coupled with a high cost of living and unpaid public sector workers—including NABCO beneficiaries and school feeding caterers—left many Ghanaians disillusioned.

Bawumia also dismissed claims that his religious background played a central role in the party’s downfall, pointing instead to deep-seated internal divisions and unfinished development projects.

He further criticized the party’s complacency in campaigning across key regions, singling out the Western Region as a missed opportunity.

According to him, the lack of unity and internal criticism gave the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) an edge, even though they had no compelling campaign message of their own.

Dr. Bawumia urged party members to avoid personal attacks in future campaigns and to work together if they hope to regain public trust.
