- Criminals are stealing cables, causing widespread darkness in Kumasi
- GHC13.8 Million is needed to repair and restore the city's street lights
- KMA Mayor urges urgent action to address the crime and fix the lighting issue
On the morning of May 6, 2025, during an appearance on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Mayor, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, also known as King Zuba, revealed a significant challenge the city of Kumasi is facing.
A City Plunged into Darkness
Despite having street lights in major parts of Kumasi, many areas remain shrouded in darkness due to broken or non-functional lights.
The issue has raised serious concerns, as the absence of adequate street lighting has not only made the city less safe for its residents but also created an environment conducive to crime.
The Role of Criminals
According to Mayor Boadi, the ongoing darkness is largely due to the actions of criminals who are stealing the cables that power the street lights.
He said These wicked individuals are causing widespread electrical outages by taking out the vital wiring, leaving entire neighborhoods without proper lighting.
“These individuals are sabotaging the city’s efforts to maintain street lights for the safety and well-being of our citizens,” KMA Mayor remarked. “We need to take strong action against those responsible for this damage. We will be organizing meetings to discuss strategies for tackling this issue, and we are committed to arresting and prosecuting these criminals to serve as a deterrent.”
A Call for Action
The Mayor revealed that the KMA has been holding meetings over the past five days to address the issue of street lighting. The funds required to repair the lights and replace the stolen cables have been estimated at GHC13.8 million.
“We cannot continue to let this go on. The lack of proper street lighting in Kumasi is a threat to our city’s security and development. We are determined to fix the problem as soon as possible, but we need the necessary resources to make it happen,” Boadi stressed.
A Hopeful Future for Kumasi
Despite the challenges, Mayor Boadi remains optimistic that with collaboration from the government, law enforcement, and the local community, Kumasi can soon regain its bright, safe streets.
He emphasized that the city will not only restore the street lights but will also implement measures to prevent future cable theft.
“We will not allow the darkness to take over Kumasi. We are committed to fixing the lights, protecting our infrastructure, and ensuring the safety of everyone who lives and works in this great city,” concluded the KMA Mayor.
