Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a leading member of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sharply criticized UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his comments regarding reparations for slavery.
Starmer suggested that instead of addressing historical injustices, nations affected by slavery should focus on pressing issues like climate change.
Speaking to reporters en route to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHGM) in Samoa, he emphasized the need to assist Commonwealth countries with their current challenges, stating, “What they’re most interested in is… working with international institutions… on the sorts of packages they need right now.”
He further remarked, “That’s where I’m going to put my focus rather than what will end up being very long, endless discussions about reparations on the past.”
In a strong response on X on October 24, 2024, Gabby Otchere-Darko condemned the Prime Minister’s perspective as “a disgraceful dismissive attitude from the leader of an island nation that best benefited from the crime of slavery.”
