Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, has fiercely condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, calling it a troubling move that threatens to undermine the independence of the Judiciary.
Awuku’s remarks come after President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice following the establishment of a prima facie case regarding three petitions seeking her removal from office.
In a post on Facebook, Awuku expressed deep concern that Justice Torkornoo’s removal would set a dangerous precedent and weaken judicial independence, a fundamental pillar of any robust democracy.
He further criticized President Mahama’s actions, warning that unchecked power could erode the very essence of justice. “History teaches us that absolute power can dismantle the core of justice,” Awuku concluded, emphasizing the grave implications of the move for Ghana’s democratic values.
