Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has declared his intent to take swift action against any Members of Parliament (MPs) found involved in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

He emphasized that MPs engaging in such activities will face the risk of losing their parliamentary seats.

This stern warning comes amid mounting concerns over the severe damage galamsey is causing to Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves. Speaking on the floor of Parliament on January 30, Bagbin urged the public to provide concrete evidence of any MP’s involvement in galamsey, pledging to take the necessary steps to remove them from office.

“I’m serious about this – any member found involved in galamsey will lose their seat. If you have evidence, bring it to me. I will take action and initiate the process for them to lose their parliamentary membership,” Bagbin said.
