Senyo Hosi, the former CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD), has called on Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to ensure respect for Supreme Court decisions, particularly in light of the controversial Afenyo Markin vs. The Speaker case.

In an open letter addressed to the Speaker, Mr. Hosi warned that ignoring Supreme Court rulings could undermine Ghana’s democratic values and potentially be seen as a “high crime.”

He emphasized that the Constitution grants the Supreme Court ultimate authority in legal matters, and failure to acknowledge this could create a “dangerous precedent for institutional disobedience.”

Mr. Hosi expressed concern that neglecting judicial authority could lead to societal chaos, suggesting that a government divided against the judiciary might encourage citizens and institutions to disregard laws and court decisions, ultimately destabilizing the nation.

He underscored the importance of respecting the judicial system for the health of democracy, stating, “Our governance structures must exemplify unity in respecting judicial authority to preserve the sanctity of our Constitution.”

While acknowledging the Speaker’s frustrations, Mr. Hosi argued that even flawed judicial rulings provide essential stability for society. He urged the Speaker to resist partisan pressures to defy court decisions, asserting, “A flaw in a court’s decision does not justify disobedience… Such disobedience risks reverting our governance to a state of chaos.”
