A 28-year-old man named Alhassan Sayibu has been sentenced to five years in prison for defrauding a woman of GH₵5,000 and for sexual assault related to a fraudulent money-doubling scheme.
Sayibu, a motor fitter from Yendi in the Northern Region, was convicted of deceiving Tabal-Tuo Vida, a hairdresser from Damongo in the Savannah Region.
The court revealed that Sayibu had posted a video on Facebook claiming he could double people’s money, which piqued Vida’s interest.
After reaching out to Sayibu, he convinced her to send GH₵2,000 for “herbs” to initiate the money-doubling process.
He then instructed her to travel to Yendi, where he introduced her to an accomplice posing as a “godfather” who would perform the ritual. They demanded more money and allegedly coerced her into sexual acts as part of the scheme.
Sayibu later handed Vida a parcel, instructing her not to open it until she received further instructions. Upon returning to Damongo and opening the parcel, she found it filled with lottery papers instead of the promised riches.
After reporting the incident to the police, Sayibu was arrested. In Yendi Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Ebenezer Kweku Ansah, he pleaded guilty and received a five-year sentence with hard labor.
In a separate case in the same court, Alhassan Osman, a car conductor, was sentenced to one year in prison for escaping police custody while out on work duty, but was later recaptured in Bimbilla.
