Adum Fire Disaster: Nearest Fire Stations Had Broken Tenders – GNFS PRO

Firefighters faced delays in responding to the Adum Market blaze as the closest fire stations lacked functional fire engines, forcing reliance on a station 20 minutes away.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed that fire tenders at the closest stations to the Adum Market fire were out of service, delaying response efforts.

According to Alex King Nartey, the GNFS Public Relations Officer, the fire broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, spreading rapidly through sections of the bustling market and causing panic among traders.

Speaking to Joy News, Nartey explained that the Komfo Anokye and Kumasi Metro fire stations, which were the nearest, had non-functional fire engines at the time of the incident. This forced authorities to rely on the regional headquarters, located about 20 minutes away.

“Though it was 20 minutes away, our officers managed to arrive in 10 minutes and reached the scene around 6:15 AM,” he noted, adding that the outdated state of fire tenders remains a major challenge for the service.
