Injuries Stifling Manchester United’s Potential – Ten Hag
Ten Hag Frustrated as Key Players Sidelined
- Manchester United has faced 45 injuries last season
- Ten Hag emphasizes the team's character and fighting spirit shown in tough matches
- Notable absences include Antony, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount
Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has highlighted that the team’s persistent injury woes are significantly hindering their progress.
Last season, United faced 45 injuries, the highest in the Premier League, and during Thursday’s Europa League match against Fenerbahce, they were without 10 key players, nine of whom were injured.
While veteran defender Jonny Evans may return for Sunday’s clash against West Ham, the status of Brazilian winger Antony is uncertain after he sustained an injury without any contact during a second-half substitution, requiring a stretcher for exit.
Defensive players Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, and Tyrell Malacia are still awaiting their first appearances of the season, while Mason Mount is sidelined for the second time this campaign, despite featuring in five matches, including the Community Shield.
Ten Hag acknowledged the impact of these injuries, stating, “It holds us back in our levels and also in our position in the league. Without our best players, we can’t field the strongest team.”
Despite hopes that hiring Gary O’Driscoll from Arsenal as head of medical would alleviate these issues, progress remains elusive.
“We need more players available frequently,” he stressed.
“We must work together—players, coaching staff, and all involved—to improve this situation. When fully fit, we are a tough team to beat and capable of achieving great success.”
Currently, United sits 12th in the Premier League and 21st in the expanded Europa League, following a series of three away draws and a solitary home victory against Brentford since their disappointing defeat to Tottenham on September 29, which fueled speculation about Ten Hag’s future.
Had they won against Fenerbahce, they would have been on an unbeaten streak of nine matches, their longest since early 2023. Despite the challenges, Ten Hag remains optimistic, pointing to the resilience and determination his team showed in tough away games.
Reflecting on the loss to Tottenham, where a controversial red card overshadowed their performance, he argued that it’s unfair to judge the team based on that game, given they were forced to play with ten men and later had the suspension overturned.
“I deny that game,” he said, “It doesn’t reflect our capabilities. Despite the tough first half, we created good chances. This team has shown character, fighting spirit, and determination in recent matches.”
