Two young men have tragically lost their lives following the collapse of a mining pit at Osino in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, when the group of seven miners was working inside the pit.

The structure unexpectedly caved in, trapping them. Local residents swiftly rushed to the scene, rescuing three miners, who were then transported to Saviour Memorial Hospital in Osiem.

Sadly, medical professionals confirmed the deaths of two miners, while one survivor remains in critical condition. Despite a rigorous search operation involving the National Intelligence Bureau, security agencies, and excavator operators, no other victims were found.

The deceased’s bodies were transferred to the Kyebi Government Hospital for autopsy and preservation.

In the wake of the tragedy, community leaders in Osino are raising alarm over the growing issue of illegal mining, particularly along the Accra-Kumasi Highway. Miners continue to operate under dangerous conditions, even near high-risk areas like roads and beneath power lines, despite ongoing concerns about safety. Local authorities have been urged to take stronger action to halt these dangerous practices and prevent future disasters.
