The cholera outbreak in Ghana has claimed 37 lives, with the number of confirmed cases rising to 359, as of December 26, 2024.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) reported two new deaths in the Western region, prompting the initiation of mortality audits to investigate the situation further.

Of the recorded fatalities, five individuals were brought in dead, and 91 of Ghana’s 276 districts are reporting a cumulative 4,618 suspected cases.

The number of districts with confirmed cholera cases has also increased from 44 to 46.

The outbreak has prompted the deployment of rapid response teams at national, regional, and district levels to contain the spread.

New cases have been confirmed in Agona East in the Central region and La Nkwantanang Madina in Greater Accra, adding to the areas affected.

Hospitalization figures have shown a decrease, with 46 people currently receiving treatment, down from 64.

The Western region has reported the highest number of hospitalizations, with 37 cases, while Greater Accra has the fewest, with just three hospitalized individuals.

The GHS has traced 9,667 contacts related to cholera cases, with 8,667 completing a five-day follow-up.

As part of efforts to curb the outbreak, the GHS successfully completed Phase 2 of the Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign in 18 sub-districts across four hotspot districts in the Western Region, vaccinating 596,205 people—92.9% of the targeted population.

In addition to these measures, the GHS is intensifying testing of food vendors and water samples in affected districts to prevent further spread.
