President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, branded as “Mahama Cares”, aimed at providing crucial financial assistance to Ghanaians battling chronic illnesses such as kidney failure, cancer, and heart disease.
The launch took place on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra.
During the ceremony, Mahama made a heartfelt appeal to the business community to actively support the initiative through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.
He emphasized that the beneficiaries of the fund include not just the general public, but also employees and customers of these businesses.
“I urge businesses, banks, mining companies, and all corporate entities to consider donating to this fund as part of your CSR. The people this fund supports could be your staff or loyal clients. Contributing to Mahama Cares is essentially investing back into your own community,” he said.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh endorsed the initiative, describing it as a much-needed step toward equitable healthcare access in Ghana.
He revealed that a draft bill to formalize the structure and governance of the fund is ready and will be submitted to Parliament once it reconvenes.
He also highlighted a significant policy breakthrough: the removal of the cap on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), a move that will free up substantial funds to support the Mahama Cares programme.
