President John Mahama has announced that he will donate his salary for the next six months to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares.

This declaration was made on Wednesday, April 29, during the official launch of the healthcare initiative at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra.

Mahama used the occasion to rally support from the business community, encouraging companies across all sectors — including banking, mining, and retail — to contribute as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.

He emphasized that contributions to the fund would directly benefit clients, employees, and citizens in need. “Some of the people this fund supports are your own workers or customers. So, when you give, you’re giving back to your own,” he noted.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was a key promise in the NDC’s 2024 campaign manifesto and is aimed at supporting patients battling chronic health issues like kidney disease, diabetes, and other serious conditions — particularly those not fully covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mahama believes the fund will fill critical gaps in specialized healthcare delivery and called on all sectors, public and private, to support the initiative annually.
