  • Active cases decline as efforts intensify
  • Increased surveillance, treatment centers, and oral cholera vaccinations help reduce new infections

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has provided an update on the cholera outbreak, which has affected five regions since October 2024.

The outbreak, which started in Ada West, Greater Accra, has spread across the Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions, resulting in 6,145 reported cases, 719 confirmed cases, and 49 deaths as of February 13, 2025.

Despite the alarming statistics, Akandoh shared some encouraging news, particularly from the Central Region, where the situation is beginning to improve.

Active cases are now concentrated in Central Region’s districts of Agona West and Effutu, but both areas are seeing a decrease in new cases. In fact, the region recorded a significant decline in new cholera cases in the past week.

The minister praised the efforts of healthcare workers and partners, highlighting that measures such as increased surveillance, the establishment of cholera treatment centers, and the distribution of oral cholera vaccines are all contributing to the positive trend.

While the outbreak continues to cause concern, the improving situation in the Central Region offers hope that the crisis may soon be under control.
