Bawku Nursing College Set to Reopen After Security Shutdown
Students’ protest prompts swift action as authorities move to restore academic activities following months-long closure over safety concerns

- College closed since November 21, 2024, due to security tensions in Bawku
- Students staged peaceful protest on April 7, 2025, demanding reopening
- Decision pending from Regional Minister and Police Commander after security review
After nearly five months of closure due to security concerns, the Presbyterian Nursing Training College in Bawku is inching closer to reopening.
The college, which shut its doors on November 21, 2024, may soon resume academic activities following renewed efforts by stakeholders.
In an interview Reverend James K. Awuni, Chairman of the Upper Presbyterian Board, revealed that the issue has been escalated to the Upper East Regional Minister and the Regional Police Commander. Both parties are expected to make a final decision imminently.
Rev. Awuni stressed that the matter is being handled with urgency due to its broader security implications and the impact on students’ education.
This latest development follows a peaceful student demonstration on April 7, where frustrated students marched through the streets of Bawku, calling for the reopening of their institution.
They expressed deep concerns over the adverse effects the extended shutdown has had on their academic performance and mental health.
The Board has officially petitioned the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to evaluate the prevailing situation and advise on the best course of action.
“We wrote to the regional minister, who chairs REGSEC, about reopening the school. However, due to the current tensions, we’re still waiting on a clear directive,” Rev. Awuni stated.
He added, “We’ve been assured that discussions with the regional police commander are ongoing. Hopefully, by today or tomorrow, we’ll receive a favorable decision informed by security intelligence.”
The college community now awaits the green light with cautious optimism, hoping to return to normalcy and continue their academic journey.
