Two Volleyball Players Crushed to Death in Tipper Truck Accident Near Odumase
Final-year student and cousin perish in motorcycle crash while heading to a volleyball match in the Eastern Region

- Victims were en route to a volleyball game on a motorcycle instead of the team bus
- Collision occurred while overtaking at a sharp curve near Ayemersu
- Both young men died instantly after being hit by a heavily loaded tipper truck
The Odumase Police Command has launched an investigation into a heartbreaking accident that claimed the lives of two vibrant volleyball players on the Oterkporlu–Odumase road in the Eastern Region.
The victims, 24-year-old Wisdom Gbli Horla—a final-year Computer Science student at the University of Ghana—and his cousin Benedict Gbli, were both key players of the Blockbusters Volleyball Team based in Asesewa. The duo met their untimely death while en route to a volleyball game in Odumase.
Eyewitnesses say the pair chose to ride a motorcycle instead of joining the team’s designated bus. While attempting to overtake a pickup truck at a dangerous curve near Ayemersu, they reportedly drifted into the path of an oncoming tipper truck loaded with limestone from the Odugblase mines.
The driver of the truck, with registration number GS 521-23, was unable to avoid the collision due to the heavy load and the winding nature of the mountainous road. The impact killed both men instantly.
Police from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) quickly responded to the scene, managed traffic flow, and transported the bodies to the St. Martin de Porres Hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation.
The volleyball community and residents of Asesewa are mourning the sudden loss of these promising young athletes.
