The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is ramping up its crackdown on exam malpractice, especially as tech-driven cheating schemes become more sophisticated.

With the 2025 WASSCE just three months away, WAEC is raising the alarm over widespread, coordinated cheating, some of which allegedly involves entire schools.

The Council warned that these unethical acts—often enabled by students, school officials, and other stakeholders—threaten the credibility of the examination system.

To tackle the issue head-on, WAEC recently hosted a high-level meeting with key players in the education sector. The goal: to develop stronger, forward-looking strategies to safeguard the integrity of exams.

John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, highlighted the urgency. “Malpractice is rising, especially with advanced ICT tools. We’ve made progress, but the threat remains. We can’t afford to wait until it spirals out of control,” he stated.

WAEC emphasized that preserving exam integrity requires joint efforts from everyone involved in the education system.
