TEWU-GH Declares Indefinite Strike at KNUST Over Governing Council Dispute

Union demands fair representation as campus services face disruption amid governance row

Story Highlights
  • TEWU-GH has declared an indefinite strike at KNUST
  • The union claims majority representation
  • Administrative and non-academic services are disrupted

The KNUST chapter of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has embarked on an indefinite strike, citing what it calls unjust representation on the university’s governing council.

The protest follows a controversial decision by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to appoint a representative from a rival group, the Teachers and Educational Workers Union under the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), instead of TEWU-GH, which claims majority membership on campus.

TEWU-GH argues that this move not only disregards the democratic will of its members but also suppresses its rightful role within the university structure. In response, the union has halted all non-academic and administrative services with immediate effect.

Leaders of the union have pledged to sustain and intensify the industrial action until their demand for fair representation is met and GTEC reverses its decision.
