Former Defence Minister and Bimbilla MP, Dominic Nitiwul, has voiced his disappointment over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) dismal performance in the Northern Region during the 2024 elections.
He described the loss of parliamentary seats as unexpected and disheartening, especially after the party anticipated winning 30 seats but managed only 10.
“The results in the North were deeply disappointing,” Nitiwul admitted. “This highlights the need for us to reassess and ensure we do better in future elections. Extensive research is underway to understand what went wrong.”
He partly blamed the party’s poor showing on low voter turnout, citing his constituency, where turnout dropped to 77%, a decline from the 2020 elections. Nitiwul emphasized that it wasn’t due to a lack of development, as he won his seat with a strong margin.
As the NPP’s Northern campaign coordinator, Nitiwul expressed personal sadness over the results, particularly given the hard work of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“It’s unfair to Bawumia. He worked incredibly hard—harder than anyone I’ve seen. Losing seats in the North after such effort was very upsetting,” he remarked.
Despite the setback, Nitiwul remains optimistic about the party’s ability to bounce back. He stressed the importance of introspection and strategic planning to regain voter confidence.
“This is a wake-up call. It shows that anything is possible in Ghanaian politics. The good news is that many who didn’t vote stayed home rather than switching to the NDC. That gives us hope—we can engage them and earn back their trust,” he concluded.
