The Bretuo family and the Asante Mampong Traditional Council have formally notified the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the passing of the revered Paramount Chief of the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II passed away last week following a brief illness.

He ascended the Mamponghene stool on August 25, 1996, following the abdication of his uncle, Nana Atakora Amaniampong II.

Born Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939, Daasebre was an alumnus of Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, Legon.

Before becoming Mamponghene, he held the position of Registrar at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi and was also a practicing lawyer.

Throughout his 26-year reign, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was celebrated for his transformative leadership in the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area, spearheading development while fostering peace and stability.

Remarkably, under his rule, the area experienced no chieftaincy disputes—a rare feat in its history. In fact, he is the only Paramount Chief since 1930 to have overseen a period free of such conflicts or legal battles.

In accordance with tradition, family members and traditional leaders, clad in black, formally delivered the sad news of his passing to the Asantehene and Asantehemaa.

Among the delegation were Nana Agyakoma Difie, Queenmother of the Mampong Traditional Area, and Yaa Asantewaa II, Queenmother of Ejisu.
