Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi, has been sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of the culpable homicide that led to her tragic death on April 8, 2022.
The sentence was handed down on Monday, April 28, by Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the FCT High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.
The court determined that the prosecution had met the legal burden of proof, convicting Nwachukwu on charges including murder, cruelty to children, and spousal abuse. The defendant was arraigned on June 3, 2022, and faced 23 charges in total. These included serious offenses such as criminal intimidation and spousal battery.
Throughout the trial, 17 witnesses testified, including Osinachi’s children, who courageously spoke about their experiences.
The prosecution presented 25 pieces of evidence, while the defense called upon five witnesses and submitted four exhibits in an attempt to exonerate Nwachukwu.
Although Nwachukwu’s lawyer pleaded for leniency, the court proceeded with the harsh sentence.
In addition to the death penalty for the homicide charge, Nwachukwu was given multiple prison terms, including two years for several charges, a fine, and other penalties.
