At least 21 individuals have drowned after two unregistered passenger boats collided and capsized in Lagos State, Nigeria, police confirmed on Tuesday.
The accident took place in Imore, located within the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.
Each boat was carrying 16 passengers when they overturned in the lagoon. According to Lagos State police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident occurred on Monday.
Eleven injured passengers were transported to the Naval Hospital in Navy Town, Alakija.
Emergency teams, including police and local divers, quickly responded to the scene.
Hundeyin stated that recovery efforts are ongoing and an investigation into the incident has been initiated.
This tragedy follows another recent incident in Kebbi State, where 48 people lost their lives and around 150 went missing after a boat capsized while carrying approximately 300 passengers.
