The Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Mr. Kwabena Kyere Stugard, has called on Parliament and all relevant stakeholders within the sports community to take decisive action to put an end to violence and hooliganism in Ghanaian sports.

In a statement made before Parliament, Mr. Stugard reflected on the tragic events of May 9, 2001, at the Accra Sports Stadium, where 127 lives were lost in a horrific incident.

He emphasized the need to learn from such painful experiences and take steps to prevent such violence in the future.

Mr. Kyere also highlighted other disturbing instances of violence in Ghanaian sports, including the physical abuse of officiating officials.

He recalled the infamous case of the female referee, Madam Theresa, who was assaulted during a match, underscoring the urgency of addressing these issues.

Following his statement, several other members of Parliament expressed their concerns and condemned the recurring violence, particularly during football matches.

The collective sentiment was one of strong disapproval of the harmful behavior that continues to tarnish the reputation of Ghana’s sports sector.
