The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is today, Monday, April 28, set to recommence his mediation efforts aimed at resolving the long-standing conflict between the two factions in Bawku.
This resumption of the peace process follows assurances from President John Mahama of the government’s continued support for the Asantehene’s lead role in seeking a lasting resolution and restoring calm to the troubled Bawku region.
In a statement issued on April 15, 2025, the Manhyia Palace officially announced that these crucial mediation sessions would be held in Kumasi, at the Asantehene’s palace, from today, April 28, to Thursday, May 1, 2025. These talks are considered a pivotal step in the ongoing national efforts to bring an end to the disturbances in Bawku.
Meanwhile, Retired Security Analyst Colonel Festus Aboagye has advocated for a more comprehensive approach to supporting the Asantehene’s mediation. In an opinion piece released today, Colonel Aboagye stressed the need for “multi-track diplomacy,” urging the inclusion of various societal actors such as diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks to foster a more inclusive and sustainable resolution to the protracted conflict.
“Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he proposed, suggesting that relying solely on traditional diplomatic channels may not be sufficient to heal the deep-seated divisions in Bawku.
