A deadly shooting at a sand mining site in Asiyaw has claimed the lives of at least five individuals during a peace negotiation aimed at addressing the escalating issue of illegal sand extraction.

The shooting unfolded as farmers and residents, frustrated by the devastating impact of illegal sand mining on their crops—such as pawpaw, cassava, and maize—gathered to discuss potential solutions.

The Adonteng division boundary chief of the Akuapem Traditional area and his delegation arrived at the site in response to local concerns over the environmental damage.

However, their peace efforts were violently disrupted when armed assailants, reportedly acting under the influence of a local figure named Togbe and Alanyo, opened fire on the group.

The brutal attack left five dead and ignited chaos at the site, further intensifying tensions in the region.
