The Upper East Regional Peace Council is urging all factions in the Bawku conflict to avoid violence and focus on restoring peace in the region.
The ongoing strife flared up again with the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile and a recent ambush that claimed at least eight lives and left many injured.
In response, the Ghana Police Service has ramped up security along the Bolga-Tamale highway after a shooting incident over the weekend.
Additionally, the government has imposed a curfew, citing the return of Chief Abagre as a significant threat to community safety.
Chairman of the Upper East Regional Peace Council, Alhaji Sumaila Issaka, highlighted the critical need for stability in Bawku, urging security forces to proactively protect residents and travelers along the highway.
The Council also called on the Bawku community to support law enforcement efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and allowing residents to pursue their livelihoods without fear.
“While we recognize the efforts of all stakeholders, especially security personnel and the people of Bawku, we urge all parties to embrace nonviolence and work together to restore peace,” Issaka stated.
further emphasized the importance of collaboration between residents and law enforcement to create a safer and more stable environment.
