A deadly shooting near Ashdod, Israel, has been classified as a terror attack after one person was killed and four others injured on Tuesday.

Reports indicate that the assailant initially targeted a police officer before opening fire on nearby civilians. The police officer succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a hospital, while the shooter was neutralized by an armed bystander.

At least one civilian is reported to be in moderate condition. Volunteer EMTs were the first responders on the scene, providing critical care.

They shared, “We administered CPR on a 30-year-old man in critical condition and coordinated with other teams to assist additional victims who were taken to local hospitals.”

According to reports, shards of glass also injured another driver, who managed to drive to a nearby intersection for help. The Kaplan Medical Center confirmed that they treated a 37-year-old man injured in the incident.

This shooting follows closely on the heels of a deadly drone strike attributed to Hezbollah, which killed four Israeli Defense Forces soldiers and injured nearly 60 others at a military base in Binyamina. Just a day before, a separate drone strike caused damage in a Tel Aviv suburb, although there were no injuries reported.

In response to the escalating violence, the U.S. is deploying a new missile defense system to Israel. The THAAD Battery is intended to bolster Israel’s air defense capabilities and reflect the United States’ unwavering commitment to Israel’s security amidst ongoing threats from Iranian-backed militias.
