Tournament hosts Morocco have been placed in a tough group for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after the draw was made.
The Atlas Lionesses will face Zambia, DR Congo, and Senegal in Group A. Zambia, led by captain Barbra Banda, recently defeated Morocco over two legs in April to secure their spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics, adding further intensity to this rivalry.
Morocco, under the guidance of coach Jorge Vilda, who led Spain to the 2023 Women’s World Cup title, will have their work cut out in this highly competitive group.
Defending champions South Africa will compete in Group C alongside Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.
Group B features record 11-time WAFCON champions Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals, along with the two best third-place finishers. The tournament will be held in Morocco from 5-26 July 2025.
Although WAFCON qualification was concluded in December last year, the finals were postponed by 18 months due to the congested international football calendar, including Nigeria and Zambia’s Olympic participation.
