In a major step toward enhancing healthcare delivery in the Northern Region, the Ministry of Health has donated a comprehensive suite of critical medical equipment and consumables to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). This intervention, unveiled on Thursday, April 24, aims to strengthen the hospital’s operational capacity amidst recent challenges.

The donation arrives at a crucial time for TTH, which has faced operational strain due to a recent doctors’ strike sparked by poor working conditions and tensions with Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. The new equipment is intended to alleviate long-standing logistical shortages and improve patient care outcomes.

The medical supplies include cutting-edge diagnostic devices and life-saving apparatus such as two Vinno Ultrasound Scanners, four defibrillators, five ECG machines, six ICU cardiac monitors, two infant incubators, and various types of ventilators (Vyaire ICU, Drager ICU, and transport models).

Additional items delivered include:

  • 20,000 face masks

  • 500 assorted sutures

  • 20 Ambu bags

  • 10 bowls with stands

  • 5 delivery sets

  • 1 EEG machine

  • 3 voltage stabilizers

  • 1 operating lamp

  • 5 emergency resuscitation trolleys

Also included in the shipment were wheelchairs, nebulizers, digital blood pressure monitors, examination lamps, foetal stethoscopes, oxygen concentrators, patient and foetal heart trolleys, suction bulbs, and kickabout buckets.

This initiative forms part of the Ministry’s broader mission to equip frontline health institutions, particularly in underserved areas, with the tools necessary for effective and timely medical care.

During the handover, Minister Akandoh acknowledged the difficult circumstances health workers continue to face. He emphasized that resolving Ghana’s healthcare challenges will require a collaborative effort across all levels of the sector.

Highlighting the need for unity, the Minister called on doctors, nurses, and pharmacists to prioritize patient welfare and equitable healthcare access. He underscored that every Ghanaian life holds equal value, and the system must evolve to reflect that belief.

While recognizing the tough road ahead, Akandoh reaffirmed his commitment to leading with humility and respect, advocating for partnership as the path to sustainable progress in the health sector.
