The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a new policy limiting media and observer access to collation centres for the upcoming 2024 general elections, aiming to ensure a more organized and secure process.
According to the new guidelines, only eight media houses will be allowed at each constituency collation centre, while a maximum of 12 media outlets will be permitted at the regional collation centres. This will include five TV stations and seven radio stations.
Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, the Deputy Commissioner of the EC, clarified the decision during an interview on Eyewitness News on November 26.
He explained that the purpose of these restrictions is to enhance the smooth operation of the collation process at both the constituency and regional levels.
“Based on past experiences and the nature of collation centres, if not properly managed, they can present significant challenges. We believe this measure will ensure a more efficient and controlled process,” Dr. Asare said.
He also noted, “This reduction in media presence applies to all levels. For example, in constituencies like Banda, Hohoe, or Bantama, having eight media outlets should be more than enough to ensure accurate information is shared.”
