The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has called for increased efforts to ensure that vulnerable individuals have equal access to their right to vote.
Based on observations made during the recent presidential and parliamentary elections, CHRAJ identified several challenges faced by vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women.
While some polling stations made accommodations for these groups, others faced limitations due to terrain or space constraints.
The Commission also expressed concern over incidents of violence, intimidation, and the misuse of state resources during the election period. These included assaults on election officials and observers, as well as the distribution of gifts and food items to influence voters.
CHRAJ commended the Electoral Commission and security agencies for their efforts in ensuring a peaceful election. The Commission also acknowledged the timely concession of defeat by the NPP and urged supporters of the winning NDC to celebrate responsibly.
To address the challenges faced by vulnerable groups in future elections, CHRAJ has called for increased awareness and training for stakeholders to ensure that their rights are protected.
