The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, has thrown his full support behind Alexander Afenyo-Markin for the role of Minority Leader in the 9th Parliament.
The Bekwai MP has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership to leverage Afenyo-Markin’s exceptional command of parliamentary procedures and his nuanced understanding of leadership within the House.
Highlighting the Effutu MP’s extensive experience, Osei Owusu stressed that his expertise would be critical in mounting a unified and strategic response to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which is projected to hold a commanding majority in Parliament.
“I believe in the value of experience and continuity. When Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu rose through the ranks from Chief Whip to Minority and Majority Leader, it wasn’t by chance—it was due to his longevity and clarity of purpose. Similarly, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has proven his capabilities, and I see no reason to introduce a fresh face at this crucial time,” he stated.
Following their loss of the parliamentary majority in the December 7 elections, the NPP will officially occupy the Minority benches when the 9th Parliament is inaugurated on January 6, 2025.
