2.1 Million NPP Supporters Stayed Home: Bawumia Blames Voter Apathy for Loss

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for 2024, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pointed to a lack of voter participation as a key factor in the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
During the NPP’s “Thank You” tour on April 23 at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Dr. Bawumia shared that around 2.1 million NPP supporters failed to cast their votes, a situation he believes was pivotal in the party’s loss.
“Despite our best efforts, we faced a significant defeat. A closer look reveals that the issue was internal — many of our supporters didn’t vote,” he stated. “This, in essence, is why we lost. Comparing 2020 to 2024, 2.1 million of our supporters did not turn out to vote. If we can ensure our supporters vote, victory is within our grasp.”
In the December 2024 presidential election, Dr. Bawumia ran against John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mahama was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission on December 9, securing 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), while Bawumia received 4,657,304 votes (41.61%). Mahama’s victory also marked a strong comeback for the NDC, which secured a majority in Parliament.
