Two Remanded Over Robbery and Illegal Military Uniform Possession

Suspects apprehended after attempting to rob illegal miners, posing as soldiers in a special operation

Two individuals, Benjamin Awal, 29, an illegal miner, and Kwame Mumuni, 31, a farmer, were remanded in custody by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for conspiring to commit robbery and unlawfully possessing military attire.

The pair, hailing from Wassa Simpa and Mile 7, were arrested after attempting to rob illegal miners in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality on March 27, 2025.

The accused, dressed in military uniforms, stopped the complainants at Wangarakrom, claiming to be soldiers conducting a special operation on illegal miners. They demanded GH¢1,000 from each of the victims, threatening to shoot when one of the complainants attempted to leave. After forcing the complainants to pay a total of GH¢1,250, the duo fled, but were later apprehended by locals.

Investigations led to the recovery of the stolen funds and the military uniforms, which were seized from the suspects’ residence. Awal and Mumuni, who were charged with robbery, conspiracy, and possession of military uniforms, will return to court on April 23, 2025.
