Sam George Calls Akufo-Addo’s SIM Registration a Complete Disaster
Minister highlights critical flaws and rising fraud in the failed initiative, as new re-registration system is announced.

Sam George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, has sharply criticized the SIM card registration process under the Akufo-Addo administration, calling it an “abysmal failure.”
In an interview, Sam George pointed to key flaws in the initiative, particularly the lack of adequate verification procedures, which he argued hampered efforts to correctly link SIM cards to individuals.
He emphasized, “The attempts at SIM re-registration were an abysmal failure. There were no proper checks, and security attempts to identify people through their SIM cards revealed major gaps in the process.”
George also criticized the previous administration for ignoring warnings about the weak technological foundation of the exercise and the inconvenience it caused to Ghanaians. “People were subjected to unnecessary long queues, and their concerns fell on deaf ears,” he noted.
The minister also highlighted the rise in SIM-related fraud and expressed frustration that the country has returned to square one in terms of building a reliable database of SIM card holders. “We’re back to square one, unable to properly identify SIM card owners,” George said.
To remedy the situation, George announced a new, fully online SIM card re-registration system set to launch in June 2025, promising to eliminate inefficiencies and create a technology-driven, user-friendly process.
