James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, has declared his acquittal as a victory over a politically driven trial.
Speaking after the Accra High Court’s ruling on April 9, which cleared him of charges after over three years of legal battles, Quayson stressed that the charges against him were rooted in political motivations.
Quayson had faced allegations of forgery and perjury, accused of holding Canadian citizenship when he ran for Parliament in 2020.
However, he maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal. “When you’re right, there’s nothing to fear. No matter the challenges, the truth will come out,” he told reporters, reaffirming his commitment to serve his community, not harm anyone.
The Assin North MP emphasized that while he had followed all legal procedures in his election bid, the case had been politically influenced. “I did everything by the book, but the case was purely political,” Quayson asserted, referencing the judges’ statements in court.
His acquittal brings an end to a high-profile case that had significant political implications, especially regarding parliamentary representation and citizenship laws, paving the way for Quayson’s return to focus on his legislative duties.
