The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called on the government led by John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the swift reintroduction and passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

During a meeting on January 14, President Mahama suggested that a government-sponsored bill would be more effective than the existing Private Member’s bill, as it would encourage broader consultation and build national consensus.

He also highlighted the need to revise school curriculums to incorporate moral and cultural teachings that uphold Ghanaian and African values.

Reiterating the urgency, Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, stressed that the government must act decisively.

He noted, “Ghanaians overwhelmingly support the bill, and technicalities should not overshadow their will. Passing it into law does not preclude its inclusion in school education through civic studies or similar avenues.”
