- He stressed the importance of maintaining a strong relationship
- Mrs. Oware-Mensah urged journalists to focus on factual reporting
The Director-General of the National Service Authority, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, has expressed appreciation for the Ghanaian media’s steadfast support and objective coverage of the Authority’s initiatives.
He highlighted the media’s vital role over the past fifty years in promoting the National Service Scheme’s activities.
During a media engagement event marking the transition of the National Service Scheme to the National Service Authority, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi encouraged continued collaboration based on mutual respect to foster a better Ghana for all citizens.
He noted that the Scheme has effectively mobilized and deployed eligible Ghanaians across various sectors for national development but emphasized the need for increased efforts as an Authority.
He stressed the importance of maintaining a strong relationship between the Authority and the media, particularly in ensuring the development of the youth.
Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi acknowledged that some public perceptions of the Authority’s activities can be misguided and urged journalists to adhere to their ethical principles of thorough verification when reporting.
He stated, “Many issues related to national service, especially postings and the behavior of user agencies, may be misrepresented in the media. It is crucial to seek clarity from Management before publishing such stories.” This approach is essential given the widespread concern among Ghanaians about national service, which impacts numerous families across the country.
With the transition to an Authority, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi noted that there will be greater responsibilities for Management and staff.
He remarked, “We need to adapt our approach to meet public expectations, particularly regarding our deployment exercise, which is central to our mandate.”
Addressing media concerns, Deputy Director-General Mrs. Gifty Oware-Mensah clarified misconceptions about alleged “protocol postings” for influential individuals.
She explained that special considerations are made for individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, and those specifically requested by educational institutions and user agencies, but this does not extend to everyone involved in the posting process.
Mrs. Oware-Mensah urged journalists to focus on factual reporting and reassured them that the Authority is always open for inquiries. “We welcome the media to verify any information you need about the Authority,” she stated.
Members of the media expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to clarify their doubts regarding the Authority’s operations and activities.
